Numerology And Self Discovery

Numerology uses an understanding of the significance of numbers to help you explore your inner self. Although we may have all of the various characteristics signified by every number in us, numerology can be used to explore our personalities, tendencies, strengths and weaknesses for each. It can help you become aware of your hidden capacities and enable you to discover your life's purpose while you discover where you would be best suited in life.

Numerology has a long and varied history. Modern numerology often contains aspects of a variety of ancient cultures and teachers, including Babylonia, Pythagoras and his followers (Greece, 6th century B.C.), astrological philosophy from Hellenistic Alexandria, early Christian mysticism, early Gnostics, the Hebrew system of the Kabbalah, The Hindu Vedas, the Chinese "Circle of the Dead", and the Egyptian "Book of the Masters of the Secret House" (Ritual of the Dead). Today, numerology is often associated with the paranormal, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts.

To get a key single digit number like 1 through 9, the calculation takes any number, such as the year 2013 AD, and then adds the individual numbers, as in 2+0+1+3 to get a key single digit number, in this case 8. When the result is greater than 9, as in 19, the number is added again to get a single digit number. In cases like this one where you get 10, it is summed yet again to get 1.

The numbers are given very specific meanings by numerologists, but there are no set definitions for the meaning of specific digits, and interpretations of the meaning of digits and their orders vary throughout different cultures and schools of numerology. Common interpretations include:

  1. Individual; aggressor; self; leadership (yang)
  2. Balance; union; receptive; partnership (yin)
  3. Communication/interaction
  4. Creation
  5. Action; restlessness; life experience
  6. Home/family; responsibility
  7. Thought/consciousness; spirit
  8. Power/sacrifice
  9. Highest level of changes

When 0 appears, some numerologists suggest it represents the beginning of a spiral into the next dimension.

Double-digit numbers are analyzed as well, from 10 to 99. These numbers, like 11, 22, 33, 59, etc., are commonly referred to as "master numbers" (see the book "Forever Numerology" by Lynn Buess, 2005). This study of numerology is based on the evidence of significant double-digit numbers in the Kabbalah, the I-ching, the Pythagorean numerology, the Tarot Arcana of the Eastern faiths, and the Runes of the Viking age.

Various authors of numerology books determine various meanings for each number, from 0 to 9 and from 10 to 99, although most online numerologists focus on 1 through 9 and master numbers 11 and 22.

Many propose a life path number based on the date you were born, and propose that this number is of great significance because it cannot change. This is a falicy because of the fact that there are many dating systems being used throughout the world today, and the years and months are very different than what we may be using. Depending on the one you use, you could have any of the life path numbers using the same exact date of birth.

For a good source of these varied calendars, click here.

Examples:

  • Most Chinese do not use an ongoing calendar year, but instead focus on a 12-year cycle based on a creature like a dragon or tiger and not a number. Also, the few Chinese that do use an ongoing calendar see year 1 as the start of the reign of the legendary Yellow Emperor, which is generally accepted as 2698 BC, so 2013 AD would be represented as the year 4711. Note that the first day of each year in this Chinese calendar system varies year to year too - sometimes in January and sometimes in February.
  • As with the Chinese calendar, the year doesn't always start on January 1 for the various calendar systems used around the world. Those of the Bahá'í faith use March 21, 1844 as year 1 BE.
  • The Hebrew calendar sees 3761 BC as year 1 AM, making 2013 AD the Hebrew year 5774 AM.

In any case, your birth path can change based on the calendar system you use. 2013 AD uses our western calendar system and adds up to an 8 as a key number. If you use the Chinese calendar year 4711, the key number would be 4 instead of 8. With the Hebrew year 5774 AM, the key number for 2013 AD is 5.

The best way to use numerology may be to see it as an exploration of these ideas instead of a definite trait that defines us. Since your so called "life path number" is variable depending on which calendar you use, maybe it is best to let the numbers help you explore the various traits they signify that are already in you, instead of letting them tell you who you are.

Numerology systems like the iChing can help you explore your inner self through ideas based on chance. Just as the year of your birth is up to chance based on where you were born and the calendar of your culture, think of numerology as a chance review of your current situation where any number generated and any meaning given to that number can help you explore your inner self. This is very important because even numerologists that use the same calendar system will come up with a huge variety of results and interpretations of those results. Get a free iChing reading on the SpiMBy.Net website, available free to members.

There are also numerology systems, which assign numerical values to the letters of an alphabet, and not just our Western alphabet. Examples include the Abjad numerals in Arabic, the Hebrew numerals, Armenian numerals, and Greek numerals. The practice within the Jewish tradition of assigning mystical meanings to words based on their numerical values, and on connections between words of equal value, is known as gematria.

For example:

1 = a, j, s,
2 = b, t,
3 = c, l, u,
4 = d, m,
5 = e, n, w,
6 = f, o, x,
7 = g, p, y,
8 = h, q, z,
9 = i, r,

Based on Pythagorean Numerology:

k = 11
v = 22

This system can provide insight into your personality, but scoring varies greatly here too.

Enjoy numerology as a tool for finding a unique perspective and insight into you! Explore, learn, and have fun!
