Once there was a man who sold hot dogs. Every day he would get up early and go to the market and buy his hot dogs and buns. Then he’d set up his cart bright and early in the city square and put out a big sign and to everyone that walked by his stand he’d shout, “Hey, Hot Dog! Get your Delicious Hot Dogs!” He sold many hot dogs and was very successful over the years. He was able to take good care of his family very well and was so successful, in fact, that he was able to send his son off to study at Harvard Business School.
While his son was gone, he worked even harder at selling his hot dogs so he could pay for his son’s expensive education. He’d get up even earlier so he could get to the city square even earlier and he put up a bigger sign and he’d shout even louder, “Hey Hot Dogs! Get your Hot Dogs!” In spite of newspaper reports that there was a recession going on, his business was so good that he had to add two stands with two assistants to help him sell his hot dogs.
When his son graduated from college, he came home to find his father still getting up early every morning and setting out his sign and hawking his hot dogs to everyone in sight. “Frankly Father,” he said, ”I’m surprised you’re doing so well; After all, the country is in a recession.” His father was skeptical, since his business was so good, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he was only an old hot dog seller and his son had an MBA from Harvard.
So as time went on, he would set up his stand later in the day and he closed the extra stands and he let his two assistants go and he stopped putting out his sign and he cut back on his orders for hot dogs and buns. And he wouldn’t bother shouting out to everyone who passed by “Hey Hot Dog!” And it wasn’t very long before he started selling fewer and fewer hot dogs. And he would sit at his stand and watch all the people walk by him and he’d say to himself, “My son was right. What a smart boy he is! We ARE in a recession.”
