Sugar Addiction: Motivation to Quit?

Submitted by Melissa Hayes English | RSS Feed | Add Comment | Bookmark Me!

IF YOU KNEW WHAT YOUR SUGAR HABIT WAS DOING TO BODY CHEMISTRY, WOULD YOU FIND THE WAY TO QUIT?

Note: the following bits of information concern addictive sugars like corn syrups, cane and beet sugar – and what we know as refined white and brown sugar.

  • If you knew sugar consumption was responsible for taking calcium and other precious minerals out of your body would you be motivated to give it up?
  • If you knew sugar consumption was responsible for accelerating the aging process would you be motivated to give it up?
  • If you knew sugar added to refined carbohydrates upsets body chemistry quickly, would you be motivated to get control over this addiction?
  • If you knew sugar consumption raised triglycerides (part of your cholesterol) would you be motivated to find other ways to satisfy your sweet tooth?
  • If you knew sugar consumption was responsible for more diseases than any other food additive on the planet would you be motivated to give it up?
  • If you knew that the most popular synthetic sweeteners can cause horrendous health problems including sudden death and blindness would you be motivated to find other ways to sweeten your food?
  • Since you already know sugar consumption is responsible for the increase in obesity and diabetes are you ready to learn how to eat differently? HOW READY ARE YOU?

I have been off addictive sugars for over ten years. Why? I was possessed by my next sugar fix and did not want to be controlled by this obsession. My weight was a constant issue; I felt awful, was spacey and had chronic Candida problems. The Candida overgrowth in my body was the part that was intolerable. It settled in my joints and muscles creating lots of pain, and the pain woke me up in the middle of the night. My spacey brain function was totally unacceptable and caused me to have several car accidents, and one of them was with a huge truck. I'm lucky to be alive after being hit broadside by an 18 wheeler! (Thankfully, I was in a SUV.)

How did I get off the white stuff? With lots of determination and fooling my sweet tooth for the first 5 days with naturally sweetened foods. Yes, I tried many times to get un-addicted...and failed initially. I have found eleven steps are necessary to really deal with the problem and create solutions. Once the 5 day period passes, then the addiction turns into a habit with memories that need to be dulled with each passing day. The palate needs to be re-programmed to enjoy foods that are sweetened in non-chemical ways; there are LOADS of chemicals in our sweet, sweet world of sugary treats and drinks.

This personal evolution of disconnecting from addictive sugars is an ongoing process and never goes away - it just gets easier as time goes on. The more I succeeded, the less I remembered about how a certain treat like caramel ice cream tasted. And since I always know having it (whatever was tempting me) will give me a "sugar hangover" the next day, I alway know it's not worth it...usually. Every once in awhile, I may have something with an addictive type of sugar, but the occurrence is very rare.

What's a sugar hangover? For me it means being spacey and very unfocused. I think this is why so many people are into caffeine with coffee, energy drinks and sodas. The majority of the population is so hooked on addictive sugars; they're trying to compensate for their spacey, unfocused brain function. Then there are some people who don't know they're spacey and unfocused; they grew up eating lots of sugar so they've never experienced life without it.

Please don't take my writing as any type of personal offense - especially if you know me. I have great compassion for those who are possessed by their sugar habit.

Some say the addiction to sugar is like a heroin addiction; that's a powerful statement! But - it can be overcome. First, get all the addictive stuff out of your living environment...and have naturally sweet foods to get you through the beginning trials. Naturally sweet means no chemical additives of any kind and no processed sugars - Try raisins, frozen fruit, fresh fruit, fruit leathers and have cinnamon on hand to keep the cravings away. Cinnamon tea with stevia works well to distract you from cookies, candy, brownies or other treats. Do not kid yourself into thinking you can have that stuff around - you will fail, if you do.
