A food crisis could come in many forms. The might be local in the sense that only a metropolitan area would be affected. They could be regional where portions of an entire state would be affected. They could have an impact on a country or it could become a global crisis. The actual cause of the crisis could be as varied as is the potential for where it might occur.

The cause might be an earthquake, drought, flood, power outages, an oil embargo and the list goes on. There is a great possibility that the cause could come from an economic crisis. Most households in America have less than 12 days worth of food on hand. An article in the Wall Street Journal stated, "Due to rising gasoline prices, as well as federal mandates, about 40% of corn—America's biggest crop—is being brewed into ethanol. By the time the fall harvest begins, the Agriculture Department expects the U.S. to have enough corn left to satisfy the country's appetite for 18 days. The country marked a supply this tight just once since the 1930s Dust Bowl era." Found here.

One would only have to learn from the recent events in Massachusetts in 2010. The residents of the Boston metro area experienced a water main break, which affected service to 2 million customers, or 700,000 households. With 64 million gallons of water lost before the flow was capped, officials had to use untreated water from backup reservoirs to continue providing water to the region for firefighting and sewage. Grocery stores which have limited supplies, quickly ran out as people suddenly realized they had no supplies. Water main breaks are a common problem as our infrastructure breaks down, and it is just one issue that can disrupt your water, food and energy supplies.

In the US, rising prices have compounded problems created by the collapse of the housing market. Rising energy costs and stagnating wages for the majority of the population have compounded the problems even more. Retail prices on staple American foods rose by double-digit percentages in the last year, according to new data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The cost of milk rose 26 percent, and egg prices grew by 40 percent.

A report from the Boston Globe [can‘t get paid only subscription] suggested that food inflation could pose a more serious threat to consumers in the US than soaring oil prices. This is because food accounts for 13 percent of spending for average households, compared to about 4 percent for gasoline. "Rising food prices can be particularly corrosive to consumer confidence because people are so frequently exposed to the cost increases," the paper commented.

According to an AP article published earlier this year, Bernanke, while trying to ease concerns of rising inflation fears from members of Congress, he told Congress high oil prices won't ignite inflation; some lawmakers were skeptical...

Gas prices jumped over the weekend to a new nationwide average of $3.37 a gallon. That's 26.7 cents a gallon more than a month ago. Food prices in January rose at the fastest since the fall of 2008. Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Penn., called the rise in commodity prices "stunning." Toomey said he worries about the effects of those higher prices, combined with the Fed's efforts to boost the economy through a Treasury bond-purchase program. Toomey said they might be "planting the seeds of serious inflation down the road."

The United Nations last week, at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called an emergency meeting for 24 September to discuss the food crisis. In Mozambique, riots broke out following the government's decision to raise bread prices by 30%, leaving seven people dead and hundreds injured. At the same time the Russian government extended its export ban on wheat by another 12 months as it battles drought, shortages and inflation at home, which threatens to push up prices further.

European wheat prices sharply rose in September of 2010, but were just below the previous month's two-year high but still 60% higher than a year ago in sterling terms. Corn prices are at their highest level since June 2009 while sugar has been on a roller coaster ride after hitting a 29-year peak in February.

Sugar prices hit a 29-year high in February, but then fell back sharply. However, last week Brazil - the world's biggest sugar producer - warned sugar crops may be lower than expected as a result of dry weather and the price climbed back to its highest level since March.
