Blasting and rock excavation is performed to prepare a site for various forms of construction and development. The site on which construction takes place may need blasting to shatter, break or split any unmovable solid rock is also used to excavate sites for swimming pools, fountains, trenches and dams if there is solid rock in the building zone that cannot be easily moved.
Blasting is also used in tunneling and road cutting when rock formations are encountered. Blasting is only performed by licensed blasting professionals who use precise measurements and methodology. Sites have to be carefully blasted to avoid damage to nearby structures in urban areas.
How is it performed?
Small holes are drilled in the rock so explosives can be inserted into the holes. However, the amount should be just enough to blast the area around these holes and the burst of energy must be directed in a specific direction to achieve the desired effect.
In this way, all the holes drilled in the rock are filled. Detonation is sequenced-so that only a small fraction of the total explosives is fired at one time.
Blasting services are generally utilitarian the following:
• Civil Construction endeavors
• Mines & Quarries
• Construction Contractors
• Developers
• Property Owners
• Governmental Institutions
Rocks can be blasted in any of the various ways depending on the construction purpose. These are:
Bulk blasting
This is helpful in mining and quarrying. In coal mines, the process enhances fragmentation, reducing production costs. By making use of proper, efficient explosives, operating costs can be cut. The blasted products can then be easily hauled, crushed into smaller pieces, sold and hauled out or taken to other areas on-site for further use.
Blasting is routinely used in commercial stone quarries. This process reduces solid rock into smaller portions that can further be crushed and sized into various sizes for sell. This is the product used in most construction projects, for building roads and highways, for making concrete and as a base for asphalt pavement.
Civil blasting
This type of Blasting is not used for producing a reusable piece of rock. It is used in the civil engineering industry to break, remove, or demolish rocks to make way for construction. It is necessary for leveling or preparation of the construction site and can also be used in trenching, tunneling, constructing reservoirs and road cutting in rock formations.
Trenches may require blasting to excavate hard rock so that electricity infrastructure or utility pipelines can be inserted into the trenches.
Rocks can be blasted to create reservoirs and sumps with similar use of explosives. Care is taken to avoid negatively impacting the environment or nearby bodies of water and should only be done by licensed professional blasters.
Professional Blasting companies also blast rocks for road cutting. Sometimes rocks have to be blasted to create a level area to build the roadway. The most difficult blasting is performed on hillsides, slopes or large rock masses on a mountain side.
