Peripheral Neuropathy is a state in which the nerves belonging to the peripheral nervous system have been damaged. Such damage may have occurred by one or more of the following three causes:
i. A disease
ii. Physical trauma to the nerve
iii. Side effects caused by system illnesses such as metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, sarcoidosis and chronic fatigue syndrome
Peripheral neuropathy occurs in four distinct patters. They include autonomic neuropathy, mononeuritis multiplex, mononeuropathy and polyneuropathy. The most common symptoms of peripheral polyneuropathy is the feet and hands getting affected in a symmetric fashion. The intensity of the effect on the limbs depends on the size of the muscle fibers that have been affected. Cases in which medical practitioners are unable to find out the reason for the occurrence of neuropathy, the patient is said to be suffering from idiopathic peripheral neuropathy.
Some of the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:
• Sensory changes
• Autonomic changes
• Severe weakness
• Loss of muscular volume
• The feeling of muscles constantly twitching
Loss of sensation including feeling temperature, pain and other physical stimuli are also common symptoms.
It must be noted that the symptoms vary with the different types of peripheral neuropathy that patients are afflicted with. There are three types of nerves in our bodies – autonomic, sensory and motor. Each of the nerves getting affect leads to a different set of symptoms. For example when motor nerves are damaged, symptoms such as spasms, cramps and weakness are experienced.
These symptoms are experienced in different combinations. If you are experiencing more than these symptoms, we suggest that you visit your family doctor. He/she will look into the matter and refer you to a specialist if required. Do not be neglectful of your health. Remember, a stitch in time, saves nine.
