What is Tiramisu made of?
The traditional Tiramisu is a coffee-flavoured Italian dessert made of ladyfingers biscuits (Savoiardi) which are soaked in espresso coffee. The pastry is layered, and a mixture of (eggs, sugar and mascarpone) on the bottom, centre with ladyfingers and on the top sprinkled cocoa powder.
There are many ways to make it in different regions, along with varieties of cakes and dessert. There are no hard and fast rules regarding its preparation, like many other traditional Italian recipes with numerous procedures. Some people used to soaked ladyfinger in Marsala wine and layered it like cake structure, and different types of cookies or the topping element coffee can be replaced with other flavourings.
Where did Tiramisu originate?
The birthplace of Tiramisu is full of controversies as there are many conflicting stories about its origin among regions of Italy. Some people say the dessert was created and served at the time of Grand Duke Cosimo III in 17 century at Siena. Many have a strong belief that it was served to the clients of brothels in Treviso to keep running their business. Moreover, some say it was originated in 1938 as a semi-frozen dessert served by Vetturino restaurant in Pieris, Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Besides all these debates it was a consensus that claimed the dish was created in 1960 by a confectioner Roberto Linguanotto who was the owner of the restaurant ‘Le Bechherie’ in Treviso, Veneto. The recipe spread throughout Italy in 1980 and become the most wanted dish. It was evidenced in 2016 by Clara and Gigi Padovani (food writers) that the dessert was created in the 1950s at a Friuli restaurant by Chef Mario Console. According to the recent survey on 29 July 2017 Tiramisu was added to the list of traditional regional dishes of Italy.
