Part of social graces is about understanding your body and keeping it healthy. I would like to introduce you to Dr. Ellen Tart-Jensen who has been my primary teacher, mentor and consultant on health issues.    Grace E. Lee

During the summer, children are playing outside in fresh air and sunshine. When they go back to school, they are indoors throughout the day and also around lots of other children and are more easily exposed to viruses and bacteria. Here are a few ways to help your child stay healthy throughout the school year.

1. Teach them to wash their hands well after using the restroom, after playing outdoors in the dirt, after playing with pets, and before eating. Germs carried on the hands can be carried into the body through the mouth. If the immune system is weak, the child can become ill.

2. Children should bathe and wear clean clothes daily. Our bodies and our clothes can carry bacteria.

3. Children should take healthy snacks to school that would boost the immune system such as raw fruits and vegetables that have been washed well, a trail mix of raw nuts and raisins, raw almonds, or almond butter on celery sticks or whole grain crackers.

4. Encourage children to eat healthy meals at home and take healthy lunches with them to school. Lunches could include a thermos of vegetable soup and some whole grain crackers, or a sandwich made from whole grain bread with healthy mayonnaise, romaine lettuce, tomato slices, turkey, chicken, or tuna. Send along some carrot strips, raw broccoli, celery sticks, and raw cauliflower with the sandwich. Another great lunch would be a nice salad made with romaine lettuce, lots of veggies, and a chopped boiled egg (fertile, organic are best). Sprinkle some raw sunflower seeds on the salad.

5. A specific supplement that can help build your child's immune system is Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to boost the immune system. It helps to protect the body from colds, flu, and even stomach viruses. Vitamin C can help to prevent allergies. Children can begin chewing a chewable Vitamin C as young as two years of age.

6. Another great supplement that boosts immunity is Vitamin D-3. In the summer sun, children receive lots of sunlight that provides vitamin D-3. Experts recommend that children should receive 1,000 I.U.'s per day.

7. For children two years of age and older, I recommend a good multi-vitamin with immune enhancers such as the delicious Liquid multi of 4 Total Nutrition - 1 teaspoon in the morning. For minerals, I recommend 1 teaspoon Liquid Coral Calcium plus trace minerals with zinc at night. Cells need minerals in order to kick out toxins. Zinc helps fight infection. Growing children need minerals in order to grow strong bones and teeth. For children younger than two years of age, I recommend the Mycelized Liquid Multi-Vitamins by Metagenics. These are very easily absorbed.

8. Babies should be nursing and moms should be taking these nutrients that will pass into the milk. Breast milk is fortified with immune boosters, especially if the mother is eating healthfully and taking good supplements.

9. Pro-biotics or friendly bacteria are most important to keep the immune system strong. Eugalan Topfer is a powdered pro-biotic and tastes delicious stirred up in water or almond milk. This powder has powerful immune builders, prevents stomach aches, and helps digestion. Two scoops of Eugalan powder stirred in water or almond milk in the evening is most helpful.

10. Finally for kids, colloidal silver has been used successfully for prevention for years. I have done a lot of research on all the colloidal silvers out there and have found that Natural Path/Silver Wings has the highest quality silver without fillers. This silver is ionic in size so that it is easily absorbed and boosts immunity in a powerful way. This silver comes in a 500 part per million (ppm) size, which is the most economical. Most silvers on the market have been watered down to 10 ppm. If you use the 500 ppm, it's often the same price as the 10 ppm and you can always dilute it with distilled water. This silver can be added to water or juice for kids. One half dropper per day for prevention is excellent. Let them take a bit before going off to school.
