Maine is known for its coastline. You can enjoy seafood at Boothbay Harbor while watching the various lobster boats and schooners sail past. As you drive along the Maine coast you will see many different lighthouses and old forts. A number of charming and elegant Victorian bed and breakfasts can be found in the coastal cities of Kennebunkport and Ogunquit in southern Maine. If you want outdoor activities and excellent scenery then you should definitely take a biking trip up Bradbury Mountain. A number of historical sites can be found in the state capital of Augusta include Old Fort Western which is the oldest military fort in the United States. Maine is an excellent destination for outdoor activities including skiing, biking, fishing and hunting.
The largest city in Maine is Portland which also features a large industrial center. There is a lot of options for visitors to this city no matter what time of year you are traveling. The Old Port Historic District is an excellent place to visit if you want to see beautiful Victorian decorations. There is a variety of shops and restaurants to choose from in this section of Portland. Another great way to spend your time is visiting the lighthouses that dot the coast nearby. Or for unique architecture and history your can visit the 86 foot high tower of the Portland Observatory. The Southworth Planetarium offers both activities and educational shows.
Visiting the capital of Augusta is a must if you are planning a vacation to Maine. There is a number of historical sites in Augusta. Among these is the Old Fort Western which is a garrison that has been around for 250 years. The Blaine House is another historical site that is used by the governor today. For a summary of the history and culture of Maine you can visit the Maine State Museum and the kids can enjoy the Children’s Discovery Museum which as hands on activities for kids between the ages of three and eleven. Maine Expressions offers lighthouse tours that run several times a day. Then there is the Backcountry Heritage Outdoor Adventures for those who are the more adventurous traveler. They offer tours for backpacking, camping, canoeing and wildlife watching.
There are three top hotels among the many options Maine has to offer. The first of these is The Colony Hotel which offers shuffleboard, golfing and a lounge, pool combination with excellent ocean views. Another option is the Black Point Inn in Scarborough which offer a historical accommodation for travelers. Finally there is Quisisana in Center Lovell which has a rustic feel to it. It is a lakeside resort that offers guests activities such as canoeing and hiking. No matter what your style you will find what you are looking for in Maine while enjoying excellent coastal views.
