Domain Guessing - What Is It and How Do I Control It?

Submitted by Teo Graca | RSS Feed | Add Comment | Bookmark Me!

Domain Guessing is a process initiated from your computer that is sometimes pointed to your service provider by default. When you type in a URL and make a typo, Domain Guessing will present some options for you. This will take you to your Internet service provider's website, which then advertises what they think you want. In my case, I always know what I want and if I make a type, I want to get a quick error so I can correct the spelling of the domain name. I don't want to wait for advertising from my service provider. Although Domain Guessing is designed to work like Google's "I Feel Lucky" feature, it has never guessed the correct site for me. Domain Guessing is just an annoyance that creates an extra step that wastes my time and distracts me from my focus. Although it is difficult to find, there is a very simple solution to this.

This entire process seems invasive to me. It allows your service provider to intercept your web requests like one of these tool bars everyone gives away, and they are probably using your information and web requests as a revenue source - they may be selling your information to others too. A general best practice is NOT to use tool bars and services like this that come between you and what you are looking for.

Although you can ask your service provider to opt you out of this service, this is a waste of time. It's quicker and more effective to take 10 seconds and sever the connection at the source - your computer. If you decide to opt-out instead, your service provider will take significant time to process your request and may simply ignore it. Comcast has removed their opt-out process recently, so the following solution is the only one available, but it is quick and easy. I only have the FireFox process documented so far.

In FireFox, simply type "about:config" into the URL or location field of the Firefox web browser and click enter or return. You will get a warning, but go for it anyway - don't be afraid - relief is almost here! Filter on "browser.fixup.alternate.enabled" and double click it to toggle it off - set it to false - and you are done! Less than 10 seconds - I love it!

LinkedIn Recommendation: Felice Amon - SEO Account Manager at Gadgetron - I have been watching Teo's business grow over these last few years and am amazed at how he keeps coming up with new applications and marketing. I really don't know how he can do all this! But, I finally hire him to do some Google marketing for my company, and we were on the first page of Google in less than a week. I am amazed. I am now working with him regularly and don't see that changing! Great work! - March 15, 2012, Felice was Teo's client
