It had been a number of years since I last saw them. We were sitting on the back porch discussing a letter theyd brought me from a friend. Since then, no word, no communication, no sign from either one of them. It was almost as if eternity itself opened up and swallowed them forever. With these thoughts in mind, I pressed the button for a flight attendant. I had the greatest urge for a steaming cup of coffee.
It couldnt have been more than a few seconds before a flight attendant came up the aisle from behind carrying a cup of hot coffee on a tray. As I started to inquire if he knew how to read minds,he stated in a vaguely familiar voice, Your coffee, sir. Just as you like it. And to set the record straight, I havent been swallowed by eternity, I just live there.I looked up with a start to see who this was, only to behold my long lost friend, Gideon. I nearly knocked the coffee off the tray, then just sat there, jaws wide open, staring in disbelief at the broadly grinning face of Gideon.
He offered me my drink and said,I didnt mean to startle you, and continued matter-of-factly with, You didnt think we were through with you, did you? After the initial shock of seeing him, the first words to leave my mouth were, Gideon! Is this you? I mean . . . I was just thinking about you and Marla. What are you doing here? How did you. . . ?
Before I could finish the sentence he put his hand on my shoulder and said, Its been a long time. Do you mind if I sit and well catch up on whats been going on?
Please, please sit. Tell me, where have you been and what have you been doing? I inquired as he slid into the seat next to mine.
