Shamanism is considered the oldest religion in the world, although the term Shamanism is relatively new. It is a community form of healing, taught through generations so that anyone interested can practice this healing art. It is credited as the oldest technology for furthering human consciousness. It is finally being recognized as a valuable scientifically proven tool for experiencing realms of reality not readily available in our modern cultures.
The term "shamanism" is often used when referring to a variety of spiritual practices, although it was first applied to the ancient religion of the Turks and Mongols, as well as those of the neighboring Tungusic and Samoyedic-speaking peoples. The word "shaman" originates from the Evenk language (Tungusic) of North Asia and was introduced to the west after Russian forces conquered the shamanistic Khanate of Kazan in 1552.
Western scholars have also described similar practices found in other parts of Asia, Africa, Australasia and the Americas. Historians have argued that shamanism played a role in many of the pre-Christian religions of Europe, and that shamanic elements may have survived in popular culture right through to the Early Modern period. Various archaeologists and historians of religion also suggest that shamanism was the dominant pre-religious practice for humanity during the Palaeolithic period.
Shamans help others reach into invisible realities to recognize and remove the negative influences, which is the basis of their healing practices. Modern medicine and healing techniques approach a small portion of our realities and may be effective for some, but not all. Purification of the mind, body and spirit through self-knowledge is the approach of the Shaman. This approach can be used with modern healing techniques. The so called modern medical sciences are beginning to recognize and acknowledge the power a positive mental attitude has on the healing process.
Some believe that the founders all religions at some point had a Shaman-like experience and that those that follow these religions are simply following the experiences of others instead of finding their own experiences. Shamans share the experience instead of explaining how to follow the experience of others. Experiencing the world we cannot see under a normal state of mind and reality can be a powerful healing experience under the guidance of an experienced Shaman.
Other healing techniques like Yogi can bring this type of experience through the discipline of the mind and body, but that is another article, which I will cover later. In the mean time, remember the primary message common to all religions - focus on the positive. With this approach, you can create a healthier and happier life whatever your faith is.
